Dear Mr. Taylor:

REdAPPLES of Norwalk is a grassroots, non-partisan community coalition organized around improving Norwalk Public Schools. We are an organization dedicated to reforming education with a key focus on raising educational standards and achievement levels for ALL students.

We are concerned with the lower levels of academic achievement that have persisted for years now for so many of our economically disadvantaged students in Norwalk. Most of the children who live in South Norwalk attend schools in other parts of the city – and many children living in the same housing complexes attend several different schools. In some cases, a given housing complex might have children attending as many as seven different elementary schools in Norwalk.

REdAPPLES recognizes the urgency surrounding the achievement gap facing large numbers of Norwalk children and are working within the public school system to advocate for more urgent action and demonstrable improvements. For this reason, we support any effort to bring superior academic choices to the families of these children, whether that is in the form of high quality public schools or innovative new models like charter schools.

The founders of REdAPPLES are pleased to write this letter in support of the South Norwalk Collegiate Academy and the leadership of Rev. Lindsay Curtis in leading this important undertaking in the City of Norwalk. Rev. Curtis has been an inspiration to our community and a tireless advocate for improving access to quality education for minority and economically disadvantaged children. Norwalk’s children and families deserve the opportunity to choose a school like the South Norwalk Collegiate Academy.
